Description
If you like standard zebra grass, you’re gonna love this improved cultivar. ‘Gold Breeze’ is a super-striped zebra grass, banded with bold yellow stripes from the base of the leaf blade to the very tip. The dense blades are much more vertical and sturdier on the plant, though they do arch gracefully at the top. When growing in full sun, we’ve had no problems with this one flopping over. But the foliage isn’t the only outstanding attribute. In late summer or early fall, purplish-red seed heads resembling wands rise just above the foliage, contrasting wonderfully with the brilliant, variegated leaves. In early fall these wands open to attractive fluffy plumes that persist through winter. The plumes are great for cutting and use in dried flower arrangements. At 5 to 6 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide, Gold Breeze is a wonderful vertical accent in the landscape and also nice in groupings or as a natural hedge. Sure to be an eye-catching conversation starter!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 5 to 6 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide, Gold Breeze Zebra Grass is ideal for use as a vertical accent or grouping in smaller garden spaces, home foundation plantings, and container gardens. Effective in larger groupings or as a natural hedge in larger landscape spaces. A fine addition to ornamental grass gardens, bird gardens, Japanese and Asian gardens and yellow theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â 3-4′ apart for hedges;Â 8′ or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Miscanthus grasses are easy to grow in a wide range of soils, from sandy to well-drained clay and full to mostly sun (6 hours or more direct sunlight per day). They prefer a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility while establishing themselves, however will tolerate periods of dry soil when established. Constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic, so make sure the planting site is a well-drained one. Maintenance is minimal requiring only an annual pruning before new growth begins to emerge in late winter or very early spring. At this time simply cut plants back to just above the ground.
