Description
Discovered by Paul Woody in Morganton, North Carolina, ‘Little Woody’ is not your ordinary Redbud. A compact and distinctive vase shaped tree that might reach 10 to 12 feet tall and 8 to 10 feet wide, Little Woody sports what we think are the most texturally unusual and attractive leaves of any redbud. Characteristically, the leaves puckered, thick and rubber-like in texture and are layered on stems like shingles. New heart-shaped leaves emerge bronze quickly turning to dark red before then to light green that ages to dusty blue-green for the summer and finally to yellow shades in fall. As with most other redbuds, abundant pinkish-purple pea-like flowers clothe branches and stems to herald the arrival of spring. An eye-catching tree for small spaces that visitors can’t resist touching to see if the leaves are real!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in an upright vase shape 10 to 12 feet tall and 8 to 10 feet wide, the Little Woody Redbud is best used as a specimen in smaller garden spaces. Make sure to plant it near a walkway or path or near patios, deck or other outdoor living spaces where visitors can view and touch it from up close. A fine addition to purple theme gardens, native gardens, woodland gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â Best as a specimen
Growing Preferences
Â
The Little Woody Redbud tree is very easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun or part shade. It is drought tolerant when established. Standing water or constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic, so make sure to plant in a site with well draining soil.
